Nanotechnology

GE scientists are discovering new material properties at the nano scale to achieve new performance levels in GE products.

The fundamental challenge of making better products lies in finding ways to create better materials. We see huge potential in the study of nanotechnology, where we are discovering new capabilities in materials at a different size scale—the nano scale—that is enabling new and better GE products.

For the non-nano experts out there, a nanometer is one-billionth of a meter (or about 80,000 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair). When studying materials at the nano scale, you find that materials behave differently than they do at the macro or even the micro level. They can do things they couldn’t do before.

We are discovering new properties that will help our jet engines fly farther on less fuel, improve the efficiency of our gas and steam turbines, enable faster electronic devices, or maybe even diagnose disease before symptoms even exist.

Our team is comprised of more than 70 scientists, representing virtually every scientific discipline. Together, we are breaking new ground in materials science and redefining what GE products can deliver for and the world.
