Where did you receive your education?
B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at MIT. Minors in writing and German language.
What are you working on now?
1) Improving the natural gas consumption and greenhouse gas emission economically in the processing of Canadian oil sands. 2) Assessing opportunities for developing water treatment technologies.
Any awards, medals, patents, or special recognitions?
A couple of new patents to start this year!
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
I am proud of who I am. I’m not perfect but I’m always trying to improve myself; I think that’s an important mindset that helps me accomplish something every day. I am also proud to be the first African American female to get a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from MIT (the article is here).
What is your computer wallpaper?
It’s a picture of an overlook on the Hadley Mountain hike. There’s a lot of good hiking around here.
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in inner-city Philadelphia, went to all public schools. I’m not vegetarian but I don’t eat anything that ever walked on four legs so I can’t comment on the cheese-steaks.
Who is a technologist (past or present) that you most admire?
Some of the folks here really amaze me.
What is your favorite Web site?
If it sells clothes, shoes, skin care or make-up, I’m sure to like it.
What do you think is the most impressive (recent or historical) technology breakthrough?
A comfy stilleto.
What is your favorite book or publication?
Any book that I actually finish reading must be pretty good. I just finished reading “Der Drachenlaeufer” in German and liked it a lot.
What invention of the future will change the world/way we live?
I don’t know what it will be exactly, but I am pretty sure it will have something to do with transportation.
What is your hobby?
I love to make beaded jewelry.I make necklaces for my friends all the time. I also like to dance.
What type of music do you listen to while you are working?
No, I can’t do that. I’m afraid a song I really like would come on and someone would walk in on me at precisely the wrong moment…
