The Materials Characterization lab at JFWTC studies the effects of external forces– such as atmosphere, humidity or corrosive environments—on the chemical, physical and surface and microstructural behaviors of different materials.

The group is working on establishing structure-property correlations that can be used when designing new materials, while optimizing manufacturing processes and predicting key material behaviors such as fatigue, creep, corrosion and electronic performance for a variety of materials to determine the performance and reliability of products.

The lab also works with a variety of GE businesses to perform material evaluations and root cause analysis for failure forensics. By studying structural, microstructural, surface & chemical compositions, the team can help identify the right material composition for each end application.
