Internships
GE Global Research provides challenging intern assignments for students who are looking to get a critical jump start on a career in industrial research. These assignments offer an opportunity to work in one of the GE Research’s labs, gaining valuable hands-on experience. Assignments are generally for 10-12 weeks. At Global Research, scientists, engineers, and technicians work together to provide GE’s businesses and strategic partners with technical innovations for their future generation products, processes and services.
You will spend your internship working side by side with experts in the field, completing challenging technical projects. You’ll enjoy the satisfaction of seeing your work make a difference while you gain valuable experience. You’ll apply your theoretical knowledge to real-life technical problems, and develop your skills in a cutting edge global environment. If your internship takes place during the summer, it will also include weekly seminars on cross-center technology and soft skills development.

Classroom Learning Module
The core engineering skills gained in assignments are honed through the Advanced Courses in Engineering. GE Global Research provides an in-house “A Course” and “B Course,” you will participate in other technical and leadership courses, and become Six Sigma trained and certified.
A Course: The “A” course is a two-semester (approximately 30 weeks), multidisciplinary course taught at the GE Global Research Center by in-house technical experts. This course has been certified for course credit at a number of Universities.
A Course currently consists of five separate modules (Energy, Aviation, Healthcare, Consumer and Industrial, and Enterprise Solutions) where Edisons tackle technical problems while gaining a better understanding of the core engineering technologies and challenges of the GE businesses. During each module, the Edisons may work together to solve a multi-disciplinary problem, solve individual assignments, or work individually on a research paper on a related topic of their choice. The A Course introduces the Edisons to a variety of technical fields and experts and gives them a head start to understanding GE and our technology.
B Course: The theme of the B Course is “From Idea to Innovation.” The goal of the course is to teach the Edisons how to come up with an idea for a new project, product or enhancement based on knowledge of the business needs and an understanding of how to plan, scope and execute a project. Courses are given in the beginning to teach the Edisons about project management and vitality. The Edisons each complete an individual project as part of the course, with several milestones to be met along the way.
Additional Courses: All Edisons take two additional, week-long classes with Edisons from across the company. One is held at Crotonville, the central leadership training facility for the company, and the other at various GE businesses globally. Each class is a chance to learn new skills, meet peers from throughout the company and be introduced to some of the top leaders within GE.
Mentoring and Evaluations:
You will be formally evaluated by your assignment managers twice each rotation: at mid-point and at the end of the assignment. Evaluations are based on completion of job requirements and the development of competencies.
You will receive an annual evaluation from the Edison leader, along with continuous informal feedback. You also will have access to the Research Center’s top mentors to help you with your career.
