10 more things we love about Schenectady (and Niskayuna)

My friend and co-worker Katelyn Buress sent me this link to an article in the Daily Gazette titled, “The 10 Things We Love About Schenectady.” I lived in Schenectady for four years while I attended Union College and can definitely attest to all things listed. From the Gazette’s list, I’m loving #3 (Union College campus) and #7 (the giant GE sign) and #5 (bakeries) is making me hungry!

We thought it would be fun to come up with our own list, so here it is.

10 More Things We Love About Schenectady (and Niskayuna)

1.Upper Union Street, which has great restaurants and quick, delicious places to grab a quick lunch during the week.

2. Schenectady Museum, for helping to share and archive some of the history of the region.

3. Northeast Parent & Child Society, because for over 100 years they have been strengthening our community through empowering our youth.

4. Burger King, because it is the original location of GE’s R&D center (formerly a barn in Charles Steinmetz’s backyard!)

5. Open Door Bookstore, for always satisfying our literary desires in a friendly atmosphere.

6. Schenectady Green Market, which provides fresh, locally grown food on a weekly basis, right from our own backyard.

7. Cella Bistro, owned by a former research scientist, you can get the freshest mozzarella in town and learn about the chemistry behind it as well.

8. Bow-Tie Cinema, because now people don’t need to leave the county to see first-run movies.

9. Mohawk Commons, because it’s got a mix of almost everything you could need and the money stays in Schenectady County.

10.The local technology, because besides GE, Schenectady and Niskayuna are filled with additional technology companies such as KAPL, Accumetrics, Bechtel, and SI.

Below is a photo of the barn that used to be where the Burger King is now!
