“Shenanigans” in Venn Diagram form

Charles Theurer

I just had to share this photo quickly.  It came as a result of a few colleagues and I attempting to define the word “shenanigans” to one of our Chinese teammates.   It makes you step back and say, “You know you are an engineer when…”

Apparently, hooligans do not engage in shenanigans. Maybe its too silly. :)

This is lovely!

Next: A set theoretic version of the oxford dictionary.

I have always been fascinated with the subtle relationships between the words we use every day. I think this relationship is dramatically underrepresented in the list form dictionaries and is completely lost in translation between languages. A native English speaker may know, for example, when to use the word glare and when to use stare but explaining the subtle difference to a non-native speaker can be difficult. One of my favorite methods for capturing this “lost information” is the “visual thesaurus” http://www.visualthesaurus.com/ This isn’t a Venn diagram but this graph method has its advantages too. Can we think of any other complex systems that can be represented by graphs like these? I for one would like to see my Linked In or Facebook Graph.

Excellent! But the lack of reference to “evil shenanigans” is worrying.
