Next generation lighting projects with DOE
We received good news from the U.S. Department of Energy. The Department announced a major round of funding for next generation lighting projects. GE Global Research was awarded two projects totaling $5.7 million. One deals with OLED lighting and the other with LEDs.
Both projects are focused on improving the performance and commercial viability of these technologies, which both have the potential to offer much higher energy efficient lighting options for people and businesses.
As you may have read from my previous entries, we have hard at work developing a low-cost, roll-to-roll manufacturing process at the Research Center to make OLED lighting devices. We believe this is critical to successfully introducing OLEDs to market at an affordable price.
In 2008, we completed a four-year, $13 million project with the DOE, Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. (a thin film manufacturer) and the U.S. Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) that culminated in the world’s first demonstration of a roll-to-roll manufacturing process for OLED lighting. The new project we just were awarded will enable us to further develop our roll-to-roll manufacturing line.
We’re also excited about the project win in LEDs as well. In that project, we will be collaborating with GE’s Lighting business and the University of Georgia to improve the performance and efficiency of LED lighting systems.
We’ll be working to finalize contract details on both projects with the DOE in the weeks ahead. I’m sure we’ll have more to say once they both get underway. Stay tuned!
