Deploying Smart Grid technology in Miami
Hello everyone, I wanted to let you know of a new announcement where GE is working with Florida Power & Light to make Miami one of the first smart grid cities in the U.S. This large-scale deployment of smart grid technology will help us understand how large cities like Miami can become more energy friendly.

I’ve done some reading about this “Smart Grid” technology, and while I’ve found a lot of PR blurbs and fluffy reviews discussing instances of what consumers might do with this technology, I don’t have the technical chops to perhaps understand the meaty details of this technology.
My primary concern is security; it sounds like Smart Grid technology has a lot to do with making the grid web-accessible. Is this only at a consumer level, or will there be parallel projects at municipal and state (and so on) levels? I would be concerned about the security of these nodes, especially in light of recent reports that our current non-web-enabled grid was successfully hacked into by Chinese and Russian operatives. I don’t know the severity of this intrusion.
I love technology and the ability to do more with a device, but I think that it is of paramount importance to consider security in these days of weakening American hegemony. There are a lot of people out there who aren’t our friends, and I think it would be foolish to deploy this technology without a good hard look at how we’re going to protect it from outside intrusion while making it internally accessible.
